en't they? >> they are. they are every they have a good sense of humor. the brothers had news conferences and then it was time for other family members. take a listen. jackie harbaugh is the rock of our family. she's the one that moved us 17 times in a 43-year coaching career. she sold houses at every stop. she bought houses at every stop. she took them into school and out of school. she went to school when things didn't go well. but this is my hero right here, jackie harbaugh. and one other thing we like to say. you're going to ask us how we feel on this historic event. jackie, who has it better than us? no-body!! >> they have a really good sense of humor, those parents

there. pretty proud of both of their sons. let's check in with lawrence on the weather in the bay area. in new orleans it's chilly. >> i got 49 degrees in new orleans right now. what a change in a high there today michelle, only 57 degrees. here in the bay area it's colder. patchy fog in the valleys, temperatures in the 30s and 40s. but we're in for a gorgeous day ahead. we'll talk about that coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we are following some breaking traffic news right now in sunnyvale. this is a live look. northbound 101 approaching fair oaks avenue. we have a big rig accident and traffic is slow going. that accident is blocking three lanes right now. as you can see the truck in the accident not overturned but it was damaged. we also understand there's some damage to the guardrail in the area and light pole. a little fluid in the area so a lot of wood be debris in lanes. so traffic alert in effect. you may want to use 280 in the

meantime. you have much more coming up. one of the san francisco 49ers team members is apologizing for comments he made this week here in new orleans. the team is also apologizing and with more on that is cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning. cornerback chris culliver is under heat because of this comment he made. >> i don't do the gay guys, man. i don't do that. >> are there any on th 49ers? >> nah, ain't got no gay people on the 49ers. they got to get up out of here. can't do no sweet stuff. >> is that true? >> yes. >> he apologized saying they are hurtful and ugly. those discriminating feelings
4:33 am
are truly not in my heart. but the question this morning, can fans be forgiving? we asked a sports bar in the castro what they thought. >> we're not letting it bother us too much. it doesn't change our perspective on the 9ers or the game. totally support them and, you know, i guess that's just something that reminds us of how we need to keep pushing for progress in the community. >> reporter: the team hasn't said whether culliver will face discipline for his comments. but the 49ers have come out and said they have rejected his comments and say there's no room for discrimination in their organization. live from the castro, cate caugiran, cbs 5. michelle, we understand that there's going to be a special performance of america the beautiful prior to the super bowl coming up on sunday. tell us who will be taking the stage for that. >> this is special. the chorus from sandy hook
4:34 am
elementary will be performing. there are 26 children in that chorus so we can't wait to hear that. their performance go going to be shown live as part of the pre-game show on cbs, also before the game alisha keys will sing the national anthem. can't wait to hear that, as well. new orleans police are also cracking down on gun owners. so far 17 people have been arrested for carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a parade one this past weekend and police are quadrupling the number of officers patrolling the french quarter this week. the murder rate is ten times the national average. and that is during super bowl weekend. so they are taking all preoccasions. and frank, i have to tell you, on the streets in new orleans there is a real police presence. they have 1200 officers from the new orleans police department out here and in the outlying areas and then they also brought in reinforcements, about 300 officers from other agent sess to help during the
4:35 am
super bowl. >> i'm not surprised. it is an international event. wait until you go through security there, michelle, for the game. it's like something you have never gone through before. new orleans and san francisco, we know they are different places but there are some similarities and many of the new orleanians say they owe san francisco a bit of a thank you. >> they are thanking them. they are still thanking them decades later. that's because san francisco came to new orleans to help them preserve their views. reporter: >> reporter: when people around the world think of the vieux carre they think of scenes like this but it almost looks like this. >> we're not talking about a highway. we're talking about an act of barbarism. >> reporter: it would stand 40 feet tall and six lanes wide 3.5 miles of it running between
4:36 am
the mississippi river and the city's iconic st. louis cathedral. [ church bells ] >> jackson square, the highway. gone. no access to the river. it's over. >> reporter: and the damage wouldn't end there. >> all you see in front of us, all these trees, all the grassy grounds are gone. this is an up ramp to an elevated highway. >> both the mayor, the governor, the city council, all wanted that elevated highway in the worst way. >> reporter: so a small group of new orleanians went to war. >> we were the underdogs. >> reporter: until reinforcements arrived from san francisco. >> they wouldn't accept a nickel. they came on their own to save the city of new orleans from an elevated highway based on their experience in san francisco with the embarcadero. never seen anything like it. >> reporter: the san francisco brigade's best weapon, one single image. >> we had a photograph of the embarcadero as it passed in front of the ferry building in
4:37 am
san francisco. and we juxtaposed a drawing that we did of the vieux carre riverfront expressway elevated in front of jackson square and we sent this out as a christmas card all over america. >> reporter: with that shot, the project was defeated. the tide of urban freeways was turned. and new orleans was saved. >> we owe san francisco big time. >> reporter: as for the embarcadero freeway -- >> san francisco doesn't want to be walled in or walled up from our waterfront. >> reporter: a demolition project new orleans never had to bother with. >> for me to be able to sit on this balcony with cocktails in the afternoon and look out and know that that concrete up ramp is not here and that the trees are here, the grounds are here, it makes the old-fashioned taste better than it would ordinarily. >> reporter: and, of course, when he says old-fashioned, he is talking about a drink. we are visiting him late last night. he not only made us an old- fashioned, but he made us

dinner, meatloaf and rosemary potatoes, something more to add to that southern hospitality. and coming up, we are going to hear from him again and what he thinks is special about false. but lawrence, we know there is so much special about new orleans. i don't know, though, if i'm enjoying this chilly weather this morning. >> yeah. it is cold. i thought she was going to say there's something special about me. not really, huh? >> well, of course. [ laughter ] >> of course, lawrence. >> you know what, we have some great weather coming our way today. looks like we are going to see a lot of sunshine and boy, it is going to be something else by the afternoon. still chilly in spots if you are headed out the door. down to 33 in napa, 36 and fog in parts of the north bay valleys. 40s inside the bay. and you can see a big dome of high pressure building back in along the west coast that's going to keep the storm track well to the north and that means we are going to stay high and dry with temperatures well above the average for this time of year. average temperatures usually in the 50s and low 60s. we are going to be way above that. in fact, about five to nine
4:39 am
degrees above the average. temperatures soaring as high as 67 degrees in santa rosa today. about 66 in san jose. and 63 degrees in san francisco. how long can this great weather last? we'll talking about that coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. breaking news in sunnyvale. we sent our photographer out this morning. you can see all the flashing lights. one lane is squeezing by past that fair oaks avenue so three lanes are blocked. this big rig accident happened a while ago. more than an hour ago. the truck did not overturn but there is a lot of damage and debris in the area. you can see all that wood debris there in lanes. and there is what sounds like a smaller fuel spill in the area, as well. so traffic alert has been issued. in the meantime, use alternates. the bay bridge is testing the new l.e.d. lights. more coming up. not your ordinary dog walk. how a bay area woman ended up

4:44 am
i didn't have one by the way. and he even made us dessert. it's that southern hospitality. so we talked a little bit about how much he loves san francisco and, of course, how much he loves new orleans. >> it's a port city like san francisco. it's a city that has the same back nailian background of bars and prostitutes, cocktails and music. it's creole. you feel the french. you feel the caribbean influence. the way to understand new orleans is it's basically a caribbean port. it has much more -- it's not southern. it's certainly not the u.s. it has much more in common with havana, with vera cruz than it does with anything in this country. it is the antithesis of anglo- american united states. >> reporter: it really is a multicultural city here:just an
